{"id":230,"date":"2015-12-28T21:58:50","date_gmt":"2015-12-28T19:58:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.fhpv.unipo.sk\/ecologistsnotebooks\/?p=230"},"modified":"2015-12-28T22:19:50","modified_gmt":"2015-12-28T20:19:50","slug":"a-noteworthy-story-of-nasiternella-regia-riedel-914","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.fhpv.unipo.sk\/ecologistsnotebooks\/?p=230","title":{"rendered":"A Noteworthy Story of Nasiternella regia Riedel 914"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>&#8230; or how <strong><em>Nasiternella regia<\/em><\/strong> appeared again&#8230;<\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<em>Nasiternella regia<\/em> was first found and described by Riedel at the beginning of the 20th century, just in 1914 on the basis of the finding in Romania. Although several more specimen have been found in Albania and Austria during several years since the period, the total number of the specimen constituting the worldwide repertory of the genus could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Since the half of the 20th century the biggest genus of the Pediciidae family disappeared into thin air&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If we are in accordance with the rules of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN): <em>a\u00a0species is considered extinct when no living individual of the species has been found for at least 50 years<\/em>, we could consider this species extinct. (EX).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nevertheless, thanks to new findings of the noteworthy species from Slovakia and Romania we know that this is not the case. It is interesting that there was almost nothing known about the species except its existence. Its larva and pupa were not known and there was no idea about its place of living &#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although not complete today we dispose of considerable knowledge (more info <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/257909330_Description_of_the_larva_and_pupa_of_Nasiternella_regia_Riedel_1914_%28Diptera_Pediciidae%29_from_Slovakia_with_notes_on_ecology_and_behaviour?ev=prf_pub\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/261636795_Nasiternella_regia_a_redescription_of_the_adult_and_neotype_designation_%28Diptera_Pediciidae%29\">here<\/a>). <em>Nasiternella regia <\/em>is closely associated with dendrotelmata which are water-filled tree holes, generally in drier and warmer regions. Larvae, not known by now, represent \u201cthe top\u201c predator of the dendrotelmata ecosystems. Pupation also takes place in dendrotelmata and the imagoes spend most of of their life in the ecosystems. <em>Nasiternella<\/em> is probably active past the day. Although it is quite big and its wings are big accordingly (to 2.5 cm long), it is a\u00a0very weak flier. The largest living population of the species is only known in Slovakia at present (plus casually caught specimen in Romania is also published). We can only hope that <em>Nasiternella<\/em> <em>regia<\/em> is more common and that it can be found in more regions.
